As the first snow flurries of the season danced in the air on my drive to work this week, I knew one thing was for certain. Winter was no longer coming. Winter was here and keeping warm was quickly becoming a number one priority. Not only does this mean piling on the layers and big down coats, but it also means looking toward your kitchen for hot delicious meals.

And we’re not just talking comfort foods. Sure a big bowl of creamy potato soup or cheesy macaroni will warm us up from the inside-out, but they certainly aren’t the healthiest choice we can make. Indulging in your favorite cold weather treat is perfectly fine every once in a while, but probably shouldn’t be made a habit. Here are a few suggestions of foods that are not only warming, but good for you too!

Sip on Tea
Tea comes in a variety of different styles and flavors, so there’s bound to be something for everyone. This low-calorie drink is easy to make and not packed with sugar and other unnatural additives. Additionally, many varieties provide antioxidants and vitamins and minerals.

Slow-Cooker Soups & Chili
Soups, chili and stews can easily cook in a crockpot while you are at work and provide an instant hot meal when you arrive home. Make sure to search for recipes that are packed with vegetables, whole grains and/or lean meats as well as avoid high-fat ingredients like heavy cream.

Roast your Veggies
Warm up your house and a healthy side dish by roasting your vegetables to go with dinner or lunches. Cooking at high heat releases the natural sweetness in vegetables and makes them tasty to even those with the pickiest taste.
