Charter Fitness Cares: Meet the Ultimate Hike Participants

On October 20, Charter Fitness employees Dan C. and Roger M. will be participating in the Chicago-area Ultimate Hike benefiting CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. The one-day, 30-mile hike raises funds and awareness for childhood cancer. If you’d like to support Dan and Roger’s efforts or learn more about the race, please visit the Charter Fitness Cares Ultimate Hike webpage.

As the guys begin training to take on the hills, water and woods of Tecumseh Trail in Indiana, we’ll be here detailing their journey every step of the way. Let’s start by getting to know these two a little bit better.

Dan C.

Why did you decide to participate in the Ultimate Hike?
The decision was not an easy one for me – you see, I am not built for endurance. I spent the early part of my life as an athlete (mostly football as a fullback) so power and quickness were the name of the game. I believed that I was actually allergic to long distances. In fact, I think my longest “hike” was the time I walked from Soldier Field to McCormick Place!

That being said, I am always looking to challenge myself and do some good in this world.  Most importantly, I am a father of 2 beautiful girls.  I know what it is like to worry, fret, and protect as a parent.  I wanted to do something that could help children and parents in need in any way, no matter how small. This is a great opportunity to do all of those things.

What do you look forward to most about training for the Ultimate Hike?
As I said, I am always looking for a new challenge, to do something I haven’t done before.  What could be more challenging (for me) than hiking 30 miles in one day on difficult terrain?

What is your favorite fitness/workout activity? What is your least favorite?
My favorite workout activities are always changing. Currently, I love plyometric training and progressive bodyweight training.  I hate, hate, burpees.

Other than the Ultimate Hike, what challenges are on your fitness bucket list?
I would like to compete in a triathlon, do a one arm pull-up, one arm push-up, a pistol squat box jump, and win the Stanley Cup.

If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
Flying. Do you really need to ask why?

What is your all-time favorite TV show?
All-time? The Simpson’s. Although I really enjoy any outdoor shows now: Man vs. Wild, Survivor Man, River Monsters, Mountain Men, Blue Planet.  Oh, and I LOVE Mythbusters.

If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be and why?
1. My Dad. He passed from cancer 7 years ago; any conversation would be good.
2. Abraham Lincoln to talk about determination and fortitude. I’d also ask some questions to find out just how honest he really was!
3. Henry VIII. I think this might be more of a psychology lesson, but I would love to know what the heck he was thinking!

Who’s your favorite athlete and why?
Favorite athlete is tough for me (you just never know what they have been doing). I guess I would have to go with Walter Payton, in my opinion, the best running back ever. He was small and slow (for an NFL player) but he outworked everyone! That kind of drive and determination has to be admired.

If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Galapagos Islands

What’s your favorite junk food?
Pizza and Ice Cream – That is in order of how to eat them, not necessarily by first and second favorite.

Cubs or Sox?
Sox

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Scuba diving with sharks in the Bahamas. That or skydiving, but one shark swam between my legs, so diving with sharks wins.

What’s the first concert you went to?
Ugh.  Janet Jackson, but my mom made me go with my sister (I swear).  I can’t believe you asked that question!

Roger M.

Why did you decide to participate in the Ultimate Hike?
I am always looking for new fitness challenges and ways to stay motivated. It also has been a goal of mine for quite some time to become more involved with charitable organizations. I happened to be in a Starbucks and I saw the sign for the Ultimate Hike.  I immediately thought to myself this a great physical challenge backed up by a phenomenal cause-I’m in!!

What do you look forward to most about training for the Ultimate Hike?
Training for the Ultimate Hike is going to force me to switch up my current fitness routine. I feel like I have become complacent with my training lately. Training for the hike will force me to up the intensity and have greater focus.

What is your favorite fitness/workout activity? What is your least favorite?  My favorite fitness activity is sand volleyball.  My least favorite is swimming.

Other than the Ultimate Hike, what challenges are on your fitness bucket list?
Triathlons are definitely in my near future. I would also love to bike the coast of California and compete in a North Face adventure run.

If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
The Zack Morris Time Out so I could pause any real life moment and alter the future.

What is your all-time favorite TV show?
Wonder Years

If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be and why?
1. One member from Seal Team Six. I would love to hear the full accounts of the Bin Laden capture.
2. CIA Director David Petraeus – Where do I begin?
3. Chris Rock. Someone would have to lighten the mood.

Who’s your favorite athlete and why?
Michael Jordan – Is any explanation needed?

If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I love adventure so probably Kodiak Island, Alaska.

What’s your favorite junk food?
Pizza, nothing is a close second.

Cubs or Sox?
Sox

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
First let me start by saying this event wasn’t planned to be the adventure it turned out to be. I hiked a mountain in New Mexico in late March not realizing that the top would be completely covered in snow. It forced me off the trail and a two hour hike turned into a full day adventure.  When I got to the top people were asking me where my snow shoes and the rest of my climbing gear was. I forgot to mention, I was dressed for the 75 degrees it was at the bottom of the mountain not the 29 degrees it was at the top.

What’s the first concert you went to?
Horde Festival – Dave Matthews Band 1995
